I’ll be honest I was skeptical that anyone outside of an expensive photo studio shop or specialty retailer would have invested the time to make a good product, let alone find it on Amazon. But I have to say, the quality of these really surpassed my expectations. They’re well stocked and put together and when filled with 8-10 lbs of sand on each side they still feel sturdy and not like the seams will burst at all. The carabiners supplied are on the cheaper side, but tbh how “premium” do they need to be? One note – they do not come with the plastic bags to fill with the sand to then insert into the holder. In my haste to order, I saw the imager of the bags and thought, “great! resealable plastic liners and the bags, perfect!”. However, the internal plastic bags are NOT included. However, basic Ziplock Freezer Bags 1 gallon are the perfect size to fill and pack the side-saddles. The hardest part is to lug around the 300lbs of sand to actually fill the damn things!!
Pro Tip: If you are buying bags of sand at your local home improvement store, they’re likely in 50lb bags. To fill all 20 saddle bags, it took 6, 50lb bags (or 300 lbs) of premium play sand (aka fine white) to fill them all, almost exactly. Springing for the extra 0.89 cents or so a bag for the premium sand may seem dumb, but the concrete or paver sands are courser and will eventually split your inner plastic (Ziploc) bags. The play sand won’t do that. And, trust me, after about 2.5 hrs of filling ziplocs of sand in a parking lot out of a trunk into bags and into the saddle bags, you don’t want to redo that anytime soon. Yeah, great podcast opty, but it’s a once a 5yr task. Trust me.
